BIOGRAPHY

Gabrielle de Grandmont is a French-Canadian mezzo-soprano from Ottawa, Canada. She is currently pursuing her Masters of Music in Literature and Performance at Western University, under the tutelage of internationally acclaimed baritone, Ted Baerg and collaborative pianist, Melanie Cancade.

From a very early age, she began taking piano lessons and later joined a local children’s choir. Ms. de Grandmont enjoyed many performances as a young chorister, including a celebration of Ludwig van Beethoven at the National Arts Centre where she sang in the chorus for his 9th Symphony conducted by Pinchas Zuckerman.

Throughout her teens, she studied with mezzo-soprano Arminè Kassabian and was accepted in the vocal program at Canterbury High School, led by James Caswell. These were very formative years for Ms. de Grandmont as she had the opportunity to explore many classical genres including German Lieder, French Mélodie, and opera. While attending Canterbury High School, Ms. de Grandmont had the opportunity to perform once again at the NAC in Ottawa under the direction of Alexander Shelley in Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This performance was a turning point for her, as the performance inspired her to pursue a performance career.

Ms. de Grandmont continued her musical training at Western University with Dr. Todd Wieczorek and collaborative pianist Dr. Yolanda Tapia. Ms. de Grandmont also participated in a number of young artist programs in Canada, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands to gain further experience performing solo and operatic repertoire, as well as connecting with colleagues from all over the world. She has performed a very wide range of roles spanning from the baroque era to the mid-twentieth century. She is very grateful to her mentors, friends, and family for their continued support in her future endeavours.
